Why competition coaching matters

The AIME funnel is narrow — and getting narrower

Qualifying cutoffs have trended upward for years as preparation intensifies. On the competition track, a plan beats raw talent working alone.

Bars are illustrative, not to scale — a true-scale final bar would be invisible. That's the point.

The method

Assess, plan, coach, sprint

The same four-step structure for both tracks — because score gains come from closing specific gaps, not from more hours of general revision.

Step 1

Assessment

A free past-paper audit (IB) or scored mock (AMC), then a 30-minute call. You leave with a written gap map whether or not we work together.

Step 2

Plan

An 8–24 week roadmap built backwards from your exam date, with topic milestones and scheduled mocks. Shared with parents in writing.

Step 3

Weekly coaching

Live problem-solving — not lecture. The student works, I probe and correct the thinking. Curated sets between sessions, reviewed line by line.

Step 4

Exam sprint

The final six weeks switch to full timed mocks, error autopsies, and pacing drills — so exam day feels like the seventh rehearsal, not the first.

An HL solution, one step at a time

This is how a session feels — the reasoning revealed line by line, with the picture doing half the explaining. An exam-style Paper 2 question on finding the area under a curve. Press Next step, or let it play.

x y 0 1 2 3 4 (2, 4) max
IB Math AA HL · Paper 2 style · Calculus
Question The region R is enclosed by the curve y = 4xx2 and the x-axis. Find the exact area of R.
Step 0 — The set-up
A = 323 ≈ 10.7 square units (3 s.f.)

Example question written in the IB HL style — not reproduced from a past paper. This is one topic; a real session adapts to exactly where the student's reasoning slips.

Prashant, founder and coach at Zaxis

The coach behind Zaxis

Prashant

Zaxis is me, not a call-centre — I coach a small roster of students, deliberately small, because grade movement comes from knowing exactly where each student's reasoning breaks, and fixing that. Every session ends with a written note home, and every month ends with data: mock grades, topic mastery, and what happens next.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

Which time zones do you teach in?

Student evenings in Singapore/Asia, Europe, and the US East Coast are all covered — Asia evenings fall in my afternoon, Europe in my evening, and US evenings in my early morning. You'll see live availability in the booking calendar below.

What happens in the free assessment?

For AMC: the student sits a full scored mock at home, then we meet for 30 minutes and walk through a written gap map — which topics are leaking points and what an 8–24 week plan would look like. For IB: a short past-paper-style audit plus the same style of call. The gap map is yours to keep either way.

How do sessions run, and what tech do we need?

Zoom plus a shared digital whiteboard. The student needs a laptop or tablet and, ideally, a way to write (tablet pen, or paper held to the camera works fine). Sessions are 60 minutes, one-to-one, with a curated problem set assigned between sessions.

Do you cover both Math AA and Math AI? HL and SL?

Yes — AA and AI, with HL as the specialty. Strong SL students aiming for a 7, or students deciding between AA and AI in pre-DP year, are also a good fit.

What age range for AMC coaching?

Typically grades 7–11. Middle schoolers building toward AMC 10, high schoolers targeting AIME qualification, and new AIME qualifiers who need an eight-week intensive before February.

How does pricing and cancellation work?

Introductory rates are $35/hour (IB) and $45/hour (AMC), billed monthly in advance as a package of sessions. Reschedule freely with 24 hours' notice; missed sessions without notice are charged. Rates for existing families are locked when you join.

Do you guarantee a 7, or AIME qualification?

No — and you should be wary of anyone who does. What I guarantee is a written plan, honest fortnightly data on whether it's working, and a course correction the moment it isn't.
